Clinical Psychologist Background
Dr Baleta's extensive experience in Clinical Psychology
After obtaining my MA Psychology degree in 2008 (UJ) (Cum Laude), I went on to complete my PhD in Psychology in 2019.
I bring with me an extensive range of experience both in clinical and forensic settings. This includes school based settings, detention centres for youth, correctional services, a forensic psychiatric hospital and outpatient community based clinics. Additionally, I have worked in centres for children who are sexually abused as well as private practice for over 15 years, where I have consulted for a psychiatric and general hospital (with voluntary, assisted and involuntary mental health care users) .
This wide range of settings has enabled me to gain experience and develop skills in working across the age span from 3 years old until late adulthood with a wide range of psychiatric difficulties.
Over the course of a few years, I also ran the Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) groups within the hospital setting for both adults and adolescents as well as established and ran the Family Therapy Clinic for a number of years. My interests extended to publishing journal articles as well as presenting at various congresses such as The World Psychiatric Association in Cape Town, 2016. I have also authored a book “Exploring Juveniles and Violence: from Their Perspective” which is available on Amazon. As a director of the Clinical Psychology Forum, I gained valuable experience promoting the interests of the psychology profession and keeping up to date with trends in the sector.

Baleta Psychology Therapy Treatment
Psychotherapy provided by Dr Baleta In Paddington
I am trained in various therapeutic approaches and have a number of different paradigms from which I can choose to effectively assist you. I will assist you with your difficulties by choosing the best therapeutic paradigm to utilise.
My main therapeutic paradigm is psychodynamic psychotherapy, which I compliment with cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behavioural therapy and family systems theory.
Psychodynamic psychotherapy is a form of talking psychotherapy that assists individuals in gaining greater insight into how and why they feel, think and behave the way that they do. Part of the therapy focuses on how an individual behaves, thinks and feels due to unconscious processes and maladaptive defences and coping skills in the present. It is highly effective in treating a range of psychiatric illnesses including depression, anxiety, childhood trauma, loss, substance abuse, bipolar mood disorder as well as borderline personality disorder.

Specific Psychotherapies at Baleta Psychology Paddington
Cognitive Behavourial Therapy (CBT)
CBT addresses the faulty and unhelpful thought and behavioural patterns that you may have by recognising them and re-evaluating them. It addresses negative and irrational beliefs and thoughts. CBT also provides healthier coping skills.
Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT)
DBT was predominantly designed to treat individuals with borderline personality disorder and emotional dysregulation. It assists in teaching skills to regulate emotions, improve relationships and reduce distress. It has been shown to be very effective with other forms of mental health difficulties as well.
Family Systems Theory
Family systems theory focuses on difficult dynamics and poor communications within the family structure and how these impact on an individual and that individual’s and family’s mental health. It focuses on interactions between people and their context. Whilst traditionally used to treat families, the concepts can be used effectively in individual psychotherapy.
